My wrong experience in growing remont raspberries
I have raspberries associated with the crown of summer. Heated earth. Hot sun. Sweet aromatic berry, which has accumulated in itself this sun and warmth of a generous earth. It is not for nothing that our great-great-grandmothers gathered forest raspberries in whole baskets, withstanding fierce competition with bears. Stocked up summer, sun, warmth ... And now it turned out that raspberries are not necessarily the crown of summer. About repair raspberries will be discussed in this article.
What raspberries are called repair?
Hybrid varieties of raspberries are called remontant, capable of yielding crops on annual shoots. That is, instead of a biennial, the plant becomes an annual. Although with its own features justifying the term “remontant”: on biennial shoots it also bears fruit, if, of course, they are left. Today, there is also the term "tutimer", which hides varieties intended for harvesting on both annual and biennial shoots. In this case, cultivation is carried out in the southern regions or in greenhouses - it is there that it can bring maximum benefits.
Repairing raspberry varieties were created on the fruiting day on annual shoots and reveal their potential with this method of cultivation. My personal growing experience, which I will talk about, will show you how to not do it.
Fruiting on annual shoots, depending on the region and method of cultivation, occurs at the end of July – October, and there is no longer any hope for the summer taste of the September and October ovaries: there is little sun. Therefore, you do not need to plant varieties that do not correspond to the growing region! This is unnecessary frustration and discredit of the variety. October raspberries in most Russian regions can serve exclusively aesthetic purposes. Well, also to brag to acquaintances.
Features of the cultivation of repair varieties
In the cultivation has its own characteristics, which it is desirable to take into account to obtain the optimal result:
- the root system of remont raspberries is deeper, gravitating to the core, because of which raspberries sprawl less and freeze less often, but require a deeper landing pit;
- it is better to plant it in the most warm and sunny place, the late harvest will be sweeter; By the way, non-sprawling bushes look beautiful with a curtain on the lawn, especially during fruiting;
- at the beginning of regrowth on the bush, it is desirable to leave 3-5 powerful shoots, cut the rest - this will strengthen the bush and approximate the ripening time; there are varieties that actively produce shoots all summer - you have to remove it;
- many repair raspberries have thick sturdy shoots, but you still need to tie them up: in the open, where the bushes should grow, the probability of damage is high;
- in regions with dry summers during fruit setting, of course, you need to water and mulch plenty of raspberries;
- for the winter you need to trim off the shoots at the soil level; although there is an option with short shoots (30-40 cm) left for the winter, which will quickly overgrow leaves in spring, feed the roots and accelerate the appearance of young shoots; after that they are cut off;
- double-crop tutimers also require intensive care: feeding, drinking, lighting and heat.
A big plus of the annual version of red-fruited raspberries is the insolubility. Even if the gardener appears once a week, the berries will surely wait for him. Well, maybe only the birds will bite. Yellow-fruited varieties will also wait, but in a more deplorable state - they have softer pulp and thinner skin.
The bushes grown during one season are deprived of many diseases characteristic of ordinary raspberries and “deceive” pests with “unusual” periods of flowering and fruiting. But the bees for late flowering will only say thank you.
Breeding is in full swing, there are already many varieties adapted to our conditions, there are plenty to choose from: taste, color, yield, bush power, large-fruited, ripening dates. In general, you can choose for yourself.
How to get two crops with remont raspberries?
The desire to get two full crops - summer and autumn, can be realized in some regions, for example, south of Voronezh, or when using greenhouses. But you need to select the timers or productive mid-early repairmen with unstretched fruiting periods.
The tops of the annual shoots that have thawed out will need to be cut in the fall, nothing will grow on them. But the remaining parts will give a good harvest next year at the beginning of summer. After fruiting, they need to be cut out completely, and from the overgrown young ones leave some of the strongest and most developed.
My experience in the cultivation of remont raspberries in the Khabarovsk Territory
More specifically, I cultivated remont raspberries in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, which is almost 400 km northeast of Khabarovsk, and the climate is even harsher.
Raspberry is a fairly winter-hardy plant and usually hibernates without problems under snow. With snow, this is just different: sometimes it covers a slightly frost-bitten ground with a warm blanket, and sometimes it lies down only after 20-degree frosts. And with long-term forecasts, especially regarding the amount of expected precipitation, everything is sad. Therefore, in any case, raspberries need to be bent and covered, otherwise there is a chance to remain without a crop.
Under these conditions, the appearance of repairing raspberry varieties looked just like a lifesaver: it bears fruit on annual shoots, it is completely optional to bother with curing and sheltering.
I wrote out, of course, Hercules and "Indian summer". In the spring, the seedlings arrived barely alive, and in the first year I wanted them to just survive. "Indian summer" it did so - it simply survived, one shoot 40 cm tall was grown until the fall and that’s it. Hercules, like a real superman, gathered all his strength, gave out two plump shoots of 80 cm each and even tied berries in September. Of course, they did not have time to ripen, but the fact itself pleased me.
The husband is engaged in crouching and covering raspberries. Somehow, in the autumn chores, I forgot to warn him about the peculiarities of growing remont raspberries, and he bent both new varieties and covered them with the rest of the raspberries. Well, at the same time - an experiment on survival.
The result of the experiment was half so-so - the next year from "Indian summer" - no leaf, no escape. Only then did she find information from the author of the variety I.V. Kazakova with recommendations on cultivation in the middle lane and the North Caucasus region. Well, not a Siberian turned out to be.
But Hercules proved to be from the best side: he fertilized with large tasty berries on last year's shoots, grew new ones and tied a batch of berries in late August. On last year’s shoots, the berries grew one and a half times larger than ordinary raspberries. On young berries, by the autumn, the berries were a little smaller and noticeably less sweet - the sun, however, was already missing.
By the fall, a familiar summer resident brought me another seedling of remont raspberries - The Mulatto, and brought the berries to try: dark cherry, the size of ordinary raspberries, sweet and sour.
Here together with Hercules and they settled in a relatively sunny place with fertile soil. The husband bent and harbored them out of habit, they bore fruit on last year's shoots at the end of July, on the shoots of the current year - in September and October. Nobody just ate the autumn berry, it went into compotes, jam, syrup, and pastries. There is a lot of sun in Komsomolsk, but the heat in September is already tense.
The bushes were planted in a new place, in the spring they cut off old shoots, rasped young for two weeks earlier, ripened in mid-September, and turned out to be completely edible fresh. Ate. And we left for the Kuban.
About growing remont raspberries in the Kuban
After moving to the Kuban and inspection of the site, it turned out that there were practically no raspberries. That is, it is, but smaller than the forest and almost without aroma. Therefore, raspberries planted different, including repair.
Despite the need for sun and warmth in the autumn to ripen the berries of the remont raspberry, I am afraid to plant it in an open, illuminated place. The sun is very active in the Krasnodar Territory in July-August. So she sits in my partial shade. Varieties "Apricot" and Hercules (I keep him faithful) grow the third year, ‘Haritage ’ and "Brusvyana" - second.
The principle of cultivation is the same as in Komsomolsk: first, raspberries bear fruit on last year's shoots, then on young ones. Raspberries have not yet grown, the summer harvest is not superfluous for us either, so we are not experimenting with growing only annual shoots. She is not ill with anything, there is no need for mowing shoots.
"Hercules" and "Apricot" have been bearing fruit for two seasons in summer and autumn, summer berries are tasty, autumn ones are acidic, but noticeably better than those that were in Komsomolsk. The first crop in June, the second in August-September. And September is still summer.
The bushes grow weakly, in the first season they gave two shoots, in the second - 3. In addition, “Hercules” grows compactly, and “Apricot” spreads. The shoots are thick, powerful, at "Apricot" - very long, about 2 m, a lot of berries.
Haritage and Brusvian last season marked autumn fruiting. And this raspberry is sweet, large and fragrant. Autumn berries are well eaten fresh, despite the abundance of sweet apples, pears, peaches at this time.
“Brusvyana”, of course, bypasses the old Haritage cultivar half-body both in terms of bush power (thick sturdy shoots, plentiful foliage) and large-fruited. But with shoot formation it is still not clear - in the first season 2 shoots from Brusvyana and 1 shoot from ‘Haritage’ grew. The first season, of course, is not indicative.
Dear readers! My experience demonstrates how not to do it: I purchased varieties in Komsomolsk - which were available, in the Krasnodar Territory - if only to plant faster. As a result, the varieties for the Far East turned out to be late, for the Kuban - very average in characteristics, although it is noticeably better than the raspberries that were.
Growing was also left to chance, which prevents the repairmen from unleashing their potential. The abundance of the sun saves the situation, because of which the berries in any case grow as sweet as possible for this variety. But you could master these varieties and much better! I will be corrected.
